The size of a cell is important because it affects its ability to function and survive. Larger cells may have difficulty obtaining nutrients and eliminating waste due to their increased volume. A smaller surface area to volume ratio makes it harder for substances to diffuse through.

Small Cells

The greater the plasma membrane-to-cell space ratio is, the more efficient the cell becomes. Smaller cells may have a greater surface area to volume ratio, allowing for a more efficient exchange of materials with the environment. The size of cells is also important in determining the organization and complexity of organisms.
