The matter around us is of two types, pure substances and mixtures. Pure substances have the same composition throughout. They can be classified as elements or compounds. A mixture consists of two or more elements or compounds not chemically combined together. The properties of a compound are different from the properties of each of the elements that make up the compound. In mixtures, all of the substances that make up the mixture retain their original properties.

Learning Objectives

After completing this module, you will be able to:

  • Identify the characteristics of pure substances, elements, compounds, and mixtures.
