Overview

Ear irrigation and the instillation of ear medication are common procedures used to clean the ear canal, remove cerumen (earwax), and deliver medication to treat infections or inflammation. This module trains medical assisting students in the correct techniques for irrigating the ear and administering ear medication, ensuring patient safety and comfort throughout the procedure.
  1. Gather the necessary equipment for ear irrigation and medication instillation, including an otoscope, irrigation syringe, and appropriate medication.
  2. Prepare the patient by explaining the procedure, addressing concerns, and positioning them appropriately.
  3. Demonstrate the proper technique for irrigating the ear, including the safe insertion of the irrigation syringe and the controlled delivery of the irrigation solution.
  4. Monitor the patient for any signs of discomfort or adverse reactions during the procedure.
  5. Demonstrate the correct technique for administering ear drops, including tilting the patient's head and instilling the drops carefully.
  6. Ensure the medication is delivered directly into the ear canal and that the patient remains in position for sufficient time to allow absorption.
  7. Provide the patient with instructions on post-procedure care, including keeping the ear dry and avoiding further irritation.
  8. Advise the patient on recognizing signs of complications, such as infection or worsening symptoms.
  9. Accurately document the ear irrigation and medication administration in the patient's medical record, noting any observations or patient reactions.
  10. Ensure compliance with healthcare regulations and facility protocols regarding ear procedures.
  11. Follow standard infection control practices, including the sterilization of reusable equipment and the safe disposal of single-use items.
  12. Practice hand hygiene before and after assisting the patient.
